Help buying gold stocks?

I’m totally clueless when it comes to the stock market or investing in anything, but I’d like to start figuring out the correct way to do it because I fear hyperinflation is right around the corner.

Yes, indeed you can open an Etrade account, key in GLD and enter a buy order. You can also opt to buy gold mining companies. It appears that many people have drawn the exact same conclusion as yourself, because gold has under gown a very sharp rally recently.

Here are your options:

GLD an index fund based on the price of gold.
ABX the world’s largest gold mining company
NEM is also a large gold mining company.
GG is a low cost producer of gold.

There are quite a few index funds that invest in gold mining stocks also.

GDX is one with its largest holdings being ABX, GG, and NEM accounting for about 35% of its portfolio.

IAU is very similar to GLD. I am not certain exactly what the differences are.

PSAU is another index fund, but I would avoid it because it is not large enough to be sustainable unless interest picks up in it substantially.

There are a couple of closed end funds: GTU and GGN, which I would avoid. They are both selling at a very high premium to net assets.

You also have the option of several open end gold mining mutual funds. One is Fidelity Gold Portfolio–FSAGX. It does not look much different from the ETFs

I don’t want to know Etrade, but there are less expensive brokers such as Scottrade.
