Gold Panning Ga

What type of rock (if it is a rock) did I find?

In Cherokee county GA (northern GA) I found several large masses of a type of rock I have never seen before. It looks like a rock and seems to stand up to erosion but I can cut it with a knife and is almost like dirt. It is mostly black with shiny pieces of mica and other materials. I believe one of the other shiny particles to be gold but don’t know how to tell.
Being from the an area known for gold in the creeks i tried using a pan to see if it would sink but i believe the pieces are too small to get any result.

Is there a better way to get these gold like pieces out?
How do I test to see if it is gold?
What is this rock type structure?

Hi. Your problem is interesting. Be sure that it’s gold first! You dont want to be confusing the gold with another very similar looking mineral Pyrite! The best way to see if its pyrite is with a hand lens or looking really close up at it (depending on how big the bit you want to see is!) Pyrite is usually blocky, cube shaped or square shaped and also shiny…gold usually doesnt have these shapes. Pyrite is also quite hard and should just about survive a go at it with a knife. To get the mineral out i advise using a knife – the mica should be quite easy to cut out if it is big enough! or have a go at bashing. The rock type is very hard to tell from your description but i can tell you that the rock is either igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary – im afraid mica doesnt narrow your choice down! Pyrite however can be found in sedimentary rocks – it might have formed when organic matter was deposited in low oxygen marine conditions.

Gold is more common than you think. Did you know the average active gold miner recovers between 6 – 20 ounces per mining season and that is with just basic gold equipment, not heavy machinery. At $1500 an ounce that would be a low of $9,000 up to $30,000.Most “newish” miners will only work gold bearing ground while on their 2 – 3 week vacation so in reasonable gold country you can easily earn $9,0…
