Gold Panning In Montana

considering an unauthodox holiday in the wilds?

I was thinking of travelling alone in montana or wyoming in summertime (next year) its off the main uk tourist route and I fancied maybe volunteering, hiking, something outdoorsy (I can ride) but i dont want to just have a riding holiday.A holiday with a twist maybe gold panning. Any ideas, (remember I’ll be on a quite tight budget)
I would consider camping
or fishing
I don’t very much like being at the mercy of others.
Oh, and i’m 34 years old, non-religious
