Gold Panning Tools
Rare substances and elements worth mining for?
For a sci-fi novel, which allows rather large ‘artistic licensing’, assume that core elements such as nickel could be mined/extracted and used as fuel.
Are there any compounds/materials/elements that could even REMOTELY fit the bill, as it were?
If so, how could one extract it? (You mine or pan for gold, you mine for iron ore, etc…)
Also, imagine that this is on a distant planet with no access to earth or any of its tools or features.
Again, this is for a sci-fi western novel, and I thought it would be cute to have prospectors mine for gold on a distant planet. I was thinking: oh, maybe to make things involve chemistry, it can be a different element!
That’s the basic premise.
The only thing I can think of is Uranium, or some other type of radioactive substance. It can be used in a nuclear reactor to produce energy.
