Where is the best place in the United States to pan for gold?

Like if I wanted to go camping for a week with my girlfriend. Must be able to drive a two-wheel drive car there, but walking in ten miiles or so is acceptable. I would use a USGS map.

I grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is a beautiful area to pan for gold & there are many areas to go both on & off the beaten track. Both Amador & Calaveras counties offer many sites. Approximately 50-60 miles NE of Sacramento. There are so many, it will be hard for you to pick. There are camp “grounds” dotted throughout the region & many places for the adventurous to find. Have fun, I’m sure it will become a favorite area for you & your girlfriend. Aloha!
