gem/sapphire mining?

hi, i was watching a program on the travel channel called ‘cash and treasures’ and they were doing sapphire mining. i wanted to know, has anyone ever done something like this? if so, did you find anything? also, where are some places i could go. on the travel channel website they list a few places, but these places charge per bag. i want to go and be able to pay for a whole day. i dont just want to go through one bag, it seems more fun to be out all day. oh, and i dont care if its just for sapphires, any gem would do(please, no gold. im not looking to gold prospect). thank you

If you live in the right area, you can mine for gems in your back yard. Or, you might have to do a bit of driving. In either case, you will need background information regarding the geology of the area, check with the Geology Dept of a local university or with a Geological Survey office, they may have some maps that could help narrow the search. Hopefully there is a river or highway or railway track that passes through an outcrop containing gems near you, because gemstones inherently occur in VERY hard rocks.

It is easier to find gems in rubble than in solid rock.

I have found gemstones during geology field camps and even just walks along rivers more than once. Believe me you are going to need a magnifying glass *lol*

The minimum gear you’ll need is a BIG hammer, a good pair of hiking boots with steel toes (for when you drop the hammer), and a magnifying glass or jewellers loop. Good luck!
