With The Price Of Gold Going Past $1,100 Maybe I Should Go Gold Prospecting Again!?

I grew up in the forty ninth state of Alaska. I was born in a small A-Frame style house in 1978. In the 1980s my father used to take me gold prospecting around Talkeetna and Fairbanks. I found it fascinating to discover shiny gold flakes in my pan. I was a gold prospector for life! Starting in about 1987 my father began working for the Valdez Creek gold mine on the Old Denali Highway. Next thing you know, he started bring home five gallon buckets full of dirt. What we were doing was wrong, but it was quite fun for me as an eleven year old boy.

Ok, I’ll move beyond the badness of me and my father. Which by the way, he was fired in 1989, though it was for beating up the foreman’s son. In the 1990s being a gold prospector was not as lucrative as it is becoming today. On Monday gold prices hit over $1100 per ounce! Back in 2005, I was invited to work with a small family at a gold mining claim in a remote section of road near Healy, Alaska. My goodness were there bears out there! Nonetheless, I discovered a hole up on a hillside. And when we were done for the day, I’d go to it and run a little sluice box in the creek. It took me about four hours to get 1/5th of an ounce. If gold hits $2,000 per ounce, which I think it will – And soon. Then I may yet again indulge myself in the craft of the gold prospector. That 1/5th of an ounce of gold would be $400 per day! It’s easy to learn the skills of gold prospecting. At the most basic level, all you need is a gold pan, and a shovel. Heck, even your hands will do. Gold is really heavy, so all you do is throw some material in to the pan. Add water from the creek or whatever your water source is. And then move/shake the pan in a circular motion. The lighter material will go to the top, and gold to the bottom. It would be highly recommended to watch a few videos on how it works for all you beginners. Once you’re done voila! Your a bona fide gold prospector ready to earn your grubstake. Every one of the fifty states has gold. How accessible gold prospecting will be to you, depending on your location is another matter. But wherever you are, be sure that you don’t trespass in another miner’s claim. They can get pretty crabby when other people are caught gold prospecting on their land.
