Gold Refining Technology

Platinoids. What are they? How are they used? Where are their commercial prices found? Other info sources?
There is discussion in the mining world about reworking old ores using new technology to extract platinoids and PGMs (?). Evidently these materials could not be extracted by earlier refining techniques applied to gold ores. In order to analyze the value of stocks of companies seeking to do this, I would like to get a better understanding of their market value. Who buys them? For what purpose?
